Snow and Defiance …

LYFT Notes:

#1 – It snowed last night. Not a lot, just about an inch and with the warm temperatures and rain the rest of the day it’s gone this evening. Early this morning, however, I provided a ride for two “traveling nurses”, from Mississippi, who are here in Dubuque through the month of February. They’ve been here just two days. They had never used LYFT before and so one of them came to the car asked if two people could use the same ride. “Of course”, I said, “but one of you will have to ride outside on the hood.” The poor lady thought I was serious for a moment. I discovered that neither one of them had ever seen snow before. I told them to be sure to have some warm gloves, scarf, hat and boots with a jacket. I explained that the temps last year got down to -30 with a -50 windchill. At that point, I hear one of them say to the other, “Can we go home now?” I laughed. Later in the day I gave a ride to a young man from Florida who had moved here recently with his Mom. He too, had never seen snow before. I asked him what he thought … “It’s cool”. — Of course it is, or it doesn’t last!

#2 – Mom has a 5-year old in Daycare and last week she was called at work to come and get him because he was being uncooperative. Apparently he refused to obey the teacher and he was involved in throwing some things … including a fit! On Friday, I provided the ride and I heard the boy ask his mom if she was going to “try to make me apologize again”. She said yes and he whined and complained. The story from Mom, after she returned to the car was that she had insisted he apologize each day for the last three days and he simply refused, crossing his arms across his chest and adopting a sullen look as he looked at the floor. Mom’s response for three days running was “No TV or games until you apologize”. This morning I provided the ride and asked mom if the little man had apologized yet? “No”, she said (it’s 5 days plus now). I said, “So still no TV or games yet, eh?” Sadly, mom responded saying, “No, I gave in on Saturday and will just have to let him do it in his own way and in his own time. He’s really a good boy.”

Thot: “No, mom, he’s not a good boy! He will bring you heartache on many nights before he ends up being arrested and perhaps in jail … in his own time and in his own way.”
