Matchmaker
April 23, 2020
I’ve only played the role of “matchmaker” once in my life and it gives me great joy to be able to say that the objects of my “scheme” are still happily married after many years! My experience in that role came to mind this evening as I concluded my last LYFT ride for the day.
I had two people in the car and dropped them off at the restaurant for their first date! The fun thing was that I have given them both rides separately on multiple occasions over the last 8 months as I took them to and/or from work.
He’s a serious young man who works in construction but, recognizing that his current job will impose a heavy toll on his body, aspires to get some training that will enable him to move on to a step up in the employment world. It has been my privilege to pray for him on a number of occasions as we have gotten to know one another in the hours before dawn as I provided transportation for him.
She is a quiet, gentle soul who works hard at an elderly care facility. She enjoys her job and teases me about NOT wishing her a quiet and uneventful shift overnight as she believes that jinxes it and assures that it will be just the opposite.
They were in my vehicle tonight because a mutual friend of them both had urged them to meet and get to know one another … so they were strangers.
He set up the ride … I was to pick her up first … and he messed up the address so I was looking for her at the west end of the street instead of 28 blocks away on the East end. We got that figured out and when I actually did get her in the car she expressed the fact that she was “not impressed” with her date to that point. I arrived at his home and he got in the car and I introduced them to each other … assuring each that their date was a “legit” person and to the extent that I knew them … both were honorable and worthy people.
As I dropped them off at the restaurant I encouraged them to “Have a good time, behave yourselves and … be home by curfew!”
It is, after all, the season of Valentine’s Day! 😉
Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match. Find me a find, catch me a catch. Matchmaker, matchmaker, look through your book. And make me a perfect match …
