An Old Dog with New Tricks
January 31, 2019
Less than two weeks shy of my septuagenarian anniversary, I’ve entered upon a new adventure in the continuing saga of my life journey. I’ve enrolled in an eLearning course with Berkeley University. The course is entitled: Academic and Business Writing. I have a couple of reasons for doing this; the first being that I have nothing else to do! Not really!!! Typically my writing skills are plied in two areas. The first is the matter of preparing the fruit of my study of the Bible into a form that I can communicate through the ministry of preaching. In that effort I aim at putting sometimes hard to understand concepts into a form that can be easily understood and grasped by most of my listeners. It is usually a mix of a didactic and semi-formal conversational styles. The second area I would describe as being rather whimsically informal. It is the type of writing I do when posting on my blog, or in the monthly articles I’ve written for publication in the IFCA International Newsletter.
I have always enjoyed the craft of word-smithing and sometimes wish that I had more time to do it. I enjoy creating content that will cause my reader to think, to smile, to learn … to change their perception of things.
The new year has presented me with the opportunity to be involved in creating an eLearning resource for church planters. My role with Midwest Church Extension places me in the center of our activity to ramp up our training ministry in order to assure a pipeline of individuals who are properly equipped for the ministry of planting churches, not only in the Midwest, but across America. In order to prepare myself for that task, I thought it well to actually participate in an eLearning course or two so that I could get a feel for what they were like. Since I was going to do that, I decided that it might be well to take a course in Academic writing to hone some my skills in that direction as well.
I welcome any encouragement and feedback you may have to offer as I set off on this new adventure. I’ll keep you posted on progress. In the meantime …. Arf, arf!
