Where Lies John Calvin?
August 15, 2009
I was reminded today that when he came near to the end of his life, John Calvin gave strict instructions that he was to be buried in the common cemetery with no tombstone. He explained his reason for this by saying that he wanted to avoid giving any encouragement to those who might make his burial site a Protestant shrine. Today, his grave site is unknown.
Of course, it is clear that Calvin’s thoughts extended beyond frustrating the creation of a mere physical shrine to his life and memory. He was a humble man and didn’t want any great fuss made over him. Do you think his strategy worked?
