The Journey

He Never Lets Go!

I woke up at 2AM this morning with a song playing in my mind. It was a song that I have not heard recently but it is indelibly fixed in my memory since an incident at my Mom’s house about 12 or 13 years ago.

It was during one of my regular summer visits to California to help with things that needed to be done around the homestead. My sister, Noreen, and I were working outdoors trimming a hedge that was grossly overgrown about 50 yards from the house. Suddenly there was a blast of loud music coming from the house, loud enough to be heard clearly where were standing. I turned and looked at my sister with raised eyebrows and she laughed and said, “It’s Mom’s favorite song, she always does that.” Curious, I walked to the house snuck up onto the porch where I could peek into the living room window. There stood my mother, in front of her walker, in the middle of the room. The radio, playing the Christian Radio station was turned to full volume and was rattling the windows. Mom’s hands were raised as she swayed back in forth with the music. In front of her were 4 or 5 border collies, sitting in a semi-circle and watching her with confused looks.

My mom, was a very reserved woman who came to faith late in life, just several years before she died at the age of 92. It was the only time I had ever seen her in worship, and the first time I had ever heard this song. That memory, and the song are a gift Mom gave me that will carry me through the days ahead.

In 8 days, on March 24th, I will celebrate two important days. It was the date of Mom’s birth in 1922, and it is also the date of my coming to Christ on March 24, 1968.

The song? I hope you will listen to it and let it minister to your heart in whatever circumstance you may find yourself. ….. Matt Redman’s “You Never Let Go!Listen here

I did not know that song before and needed it today for what I’m dealing with. Thanks for that lovely picture of your elderly mom with her walker and her dogs in jubilant praise.

Thank you my sister. I’m so glad the song ministered to you today. Hi, to Ken! Hope he’s not the source of your distress!. The image of my mom in worship is one that I will never lose! She was well into her 80s before she trusted Christ. After my Dad died, I encouraged her and my sister to leave the liberal Methodist church (not a hard persuasion since no one from the church reached out when Dad died) and attend the IFCA Church a few miles away in Atwater CA. It was there that my Mom came to Christ, and my sister was nurtured in her faith, at Atwater Community Bible Church under the ministry of Pastor Dwight Thompson. Bud Haskell’s dad, Merton used to pastor that church prior to Dwight.
