The Nobel Farce

I was sure it was a joke! No one in their right mind would actually award the Nobel Peace Prize to an individual who is untested, unproven and virtually unknown on the world stage by anything except smooth rhetoric and politically motivated promises for the future.

But it’s no joke. Through some convoluted thought process the committee that bestows this honor arrived at the determination that President Barak Obama meets the standard of being “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”.

In my opinion, this makes a farce out of the award. It would seem as though this prestigious award has been cheapened to the status of an “incentive” to achieve rather than an award for having done so. There is something rotten in Norway.

This puts me in mind of the pre-pubescent beauty pageants where irresponsible mothers who are “has been” or “wannabe beauty queens” dress up their 6 and 7 year old girls in provocative clothing, paint their faces and teach them the art of seductive body language in hopes of gaining some vicarious thrill for themselves. I think that practice is sick and I think those who encourage it are sick as well. It is symbolic of a lot of what is wrong with this country … but that’s another blog post.

I have no idea of the larger motivation behind the scenes in the awarding of the Nobel Prize to our President but I think it makes about as much sense as the pre-pubescent beauty pageants. It cheapens the award. If the President, who took office just 14 days before the deadline for nominations, understands and wants to preserve the integrity of this coveted prize, he will refuse to accept it. I’m confident, however, that will not happen.
