Floozies and the Gifts of God

NinjaMy little grand-babies are coming for a visit this weekend.  Even though we are blessed by the fact that we see them regularly, it is not often that we enjoy the opportunity to have them here, “over the river and through the woods” in Grampy and Grammy’s home. I’m excited!

I have observed, with interest, how much Lucy and Margo enjoy their “foovies” (Lucy’s word for “smoothies”). A fancy, state of the art, food blender sits on the kitchen counter in their home and on a regular basis it is filled with fruit or vegetables and ice and other ingredients.  A switch is pressed and both girls cover their ears … sometimes retreating to the next room … and complain about the “loud noise”.  When the machine is turned off, they excitedly wait for their cups to be filled with nutritious goodness which they eagerly sip through straws.

Some weeks ago, after observing this “foovie” phenomenon, I noticed an inexpensive, vintage, food blender on our kitchen counter.  It had been sitting there for years and was hardly ever used.  I decided to see if it would make “floozies” (my own word for “foovie”/”smoothie”).  I threw some ice, and fresh fruits, nuts and yogurt into the device and flipped the switch.  It was loud (though no one covered their ears) but just as effective in making a nutritious treat.  Since then Linda and I have enjoyed our own “floozies” on a regular basis!

Last night, however, our vintage blender bit the dust.  Linda’s sad lament was expressed in the words, “I guess we won’t be drinking floozies anymore”

My reaction was different, however.  My thoughts immediately went to the anticipated visit of the babies … and I was concerned about an inability to delight them by producing such nutritious treats during their visit!!!

Because of that concern, my first order of business this morning was to find a suitable replacement machine.  I found it in the Nutri Ninja Blender DUO with Auto-IQ!!!!  Ninja Floozies!  I like the sound of that!  Using coupons and incentives I purchased it on line for store pick-up at less than half its retail price (but probably three or four times what the vintage machine cost when it was purchased).

With assurances that it would be available for pick-up at the store within hours, I relaxed … until … I got an e-mail informing me that the pick-up had been delayed.  I panicked … delayed? … how long?  I called customer service and let them know that if I could not have this device for making “floozies” before Friday morning I’d have to shop somewhere else!

In spite of her confusion over my use of the word “floozies” associated with a food blender (the lady asked me twice to say it again) she was very sweet and patient with me, assuring me that I needed not to worry, I’d be making “floozies” by the time Lucy and Margo arrive!  I was glad and well pleased.  I will be even more glad and well pleased when I see the faces of those little ones as we dump the fruit into the pitcher and then pour out a cup filled with nutritious goodness!!!

Anticipating that moment, and the pleasure it will give me, I thought about the pleasure that God must derive from providing us … His children … with good and perfect gifts.  Three passages came to mind:

James 1.17: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Luke 11.11-13: What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Romans 8.32: He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things

Some wonderful truths to contemplate as I enjoy making “floozies” for my little ones!
