The Voyage

As I sat with my sweetheart, listening to Celtic music this evening, I heard this song sung by Celtic Thunder …  As the lyrics unfolded to my ears, they touched my heart as well.  I was a sailor when I met the lady who is still my girlfriend and sits beside me.  The song fits well with our experience over the last 48 years (as I’m sure it does for many of you too).  I’m so thankful for the “crew” that we now have around us.

I am a sailor, you’re my first mate
We signed on together, we coupled our fate
We hauled up our anchor, determined not to fail
For the heart’s treasure, together we set sailWith no maps to guide us we steered our own course
We rode out the storms when the winds were gale force
We sat out the doldrums in patience, and hope
Working together, we learned how to copeLife is an ocean, love is a boat
In troubled waters, it keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you
Now gathered round us, we have our own crew

Together we’re in this relationship
We built it with care, to last the whole trip
Our true destination’s not marked on any charts
We’re navigating for the shores of the heart

Life is an ocean and love is a boat
In troubled waters, it keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you
Now gathered round us, we have our own crew

And now … we listen to “The Wild Rover” … talk about contrast!
I’ve been a wild rover for many’s the year
and I’ve spent all my money on whiskey and beer.
But now I’m returning with gold in great store
and I never will play the wild rover no more
And it’s no, nay, never,
no, nay, never, no more
will I play the wild rover
no, never, no more
