Thoughts on a Garden Plot
April 14, 2010
One of the Rites of Spring that I look forward to each year is the process of preparing the vegetable garden beds to receive the seed in hopes of a bountiful harvest later in the Summer and Fall. There have been times when I have prepared the ground and then walked barefoot in the warm soil being careful not to stand still for very long lest some roots begin to sprout from the bottom of my feet and from between my toes! I like Spring. I like planting seeds and then checking the plots each morning on my early morning rounds through the yard, to see what is coming up. I’ll start that the day after planting, knowing that it is too early to see anything yet … but still I check; and will check faithfully every day. I uncovered my strawberry patch the other day and they are going strong, reaching for the sun and spreading their leaves. My grape vines are pushing buds as are my fruit trees. We got hostas, tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, irises and various other beauties coming up all over the place. It’s Glorious! It was even fun watching Linda cut the grass! :-)! She’s standing in the dining room going through the seeds and reading the directions. The Menu includes: Tendersweet Carrots, Blue Lake Pole Beans, Golden Wax Bush Beans, Purple Pod Pole Beans, Birdhouse Gourds, Goblin Egg Gourds, Oregano, Lavender, Sage, Basil, Dill, Cucumbers, Black Seed Lettuce, Red Sails Lettuce, German Giant Radishes, Two varieties of Summer Squash and one of Winter Squash, Tomatoes, Garlic and Onions.
I think I’ll go barefoot in the garden tomorrow!
