Taking the Back Way
August 12, 2014
Written from Linda’s perspective:
We got up at 7am this morning, packed up and headed out toward Fresno. We took the long route up into the mountains, stopping at the grave of George Hicks Fancher. He moved to Merced from New York and was a wealthy rancher who wanted to be sure people would remember him. So he paid 25,000.00 to have the monument built and it is maintained to this day by his estate. He died in 1900.
We stopped in Mariposa next where we had breakfast at the Jantz Bakery. It is run by a Mennonite family who came here from Kansas. Tim had a huge plate of biscuits and gravy and a large piece of fresh peach pie. I had some fruit, raisin toast and a blueberry scone. We both enjoyed some genuine Mariposa Coffee! Yeah!
The drive through the mountains was wonderful and I tried to take pictures from the car. We drove to Clovis where we went to four different antique stores. There are several more to visit tomorrow. We found about 50 pieces we can re-sell. It’s a little more expensive to buy out here but we did find some nice pieces.
We had lunch at the Corner Cafe. Tim had a Ranch Burger and I had a Cali-Burger (has bacon and avocado).
By 3pm we were ready to find our room at the Super8 in Downtown Fresno. We worked on some jewelry, had some pizza delivered and are looking forward to a good night’s rest at the end of a nice relaxing day. 🙂
